We are based in Norwood, Massachusetts, which is comfortably within the Boston metropolitan area. HMF's facilities include a state-of-the-art plant, and R&D facility, as well as warehouse and Corporate functions.  We are focused on continued growth and are executing against various initiatives that include additional product lines, new sales channels, greater penetration of our extensive customer relationships, as well as opportunistic acquisitions.  Our success is directly dependent on attracting and retaining the best possible talent across our functions.  To this end, we are posting for a strong Director of Manufacturing. 

 

 

OVERVIEW OF ROLE

The Director is responsible for overseeing the entire manufacturing operation through a team of functional managers and supervisors. The successful candidate will be accountable for all aspects of plant performance, utilizing continuous improvement strategies, and will ensure that objectives are attained in a cost-effective manner consistent with our Company values. The Director of Manufacturing will delegate authority to production and maintenance management.  This leader will have overall responsibility for safety, productivity, continuous improvement, capital start-up and employee engagement. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Directs, drives and manages plant operations for production with a focus on operating efficiency (OEE) and SQF (Safe Quality Food) production.
  • Acts as the change leaders for new ways of working. Implements, leads and supports a lean manufacturing culture that aligns to the annual business plan.
  • Coaches, directs and mentors staff to ensure manufacturing objectives are accomplished in a timely and cost-effective manner, reducing waste and producing the highest level of quality of product.
  • Collaborates closely with R&D and marketing to develop products that both win in the market place, as well as deliver profit to the business.
  • Maintains an engaged and team-oriented workforce to meet business demands.
  • Communicates potential and actual food safety issues to key personnel to initiate the corrective action process.
  • Works closely with supply chain team in short and long-term production scheduling.
  • Directs the maintenance department to ensure effective plant facilities and equipment; replaces, or adjusts plant facilities and equipment when necessary.
  • Works in conjunction with the technical team on the allocation of maintenance resources and activities tied to strategic equipment installations and initiatives.
  • Develops, owns, and executes department budgets.
  • Creates the manufacturing structure that will control and minimize labor and overtime expenses in operations and maintenance.
  • Drives cost effective systems of control over operating expenditures, manpower, wages and salaries through expanded use of the Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and partnering with finance.
  • Collaborates, partners, and demonstrates leadership as a core member of safety team.
  • Ensures that all manufacturing operations are carried out in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and laws governing business operations.
  • Provides leadership for problem-resolution to facilitate fast improvements and improved working relationships.
  • Ensures compliance with Company standards for cost control, waste reduction, quality, OSHA, safety, and complete and on-time delivery at the lowest possible cost.
  • Tracks progress of yields, labor, and all related expenses. Uses metrics or develops metrics to drive data driven decision making.
  • Possesses strong communication skills, both verbal and written. This leader must ensure the plant personnel feel engaged and that there is open and clear on-going communication.
  • Oversees cultural change initiatives and continually seeks improvement of competitive edge of the plant operations
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in agriculture, animal science, industrial engineering, business or related field and 8+ years of experience in plant management.
  • Minimum of 10 years in meat-processing manufacturing experience. Fully cooked hot dog and sausage experience is a plus.
  • Manufacturing knowledge and understanding of yields, plant efficiencies, and operations procedures.
  • Past successful experience as a Maintenance and/or Operations Manager preferred.
  • Solid understanding of OSHA, USDA and food safety regulations.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • High level of organizational planning, teamwork, analytical reasoning, and adaptability.
  • Strong interpersonal, technical skills.
  • Demonstrated success as a change agent and developing and implementing continuous improvements and initiatives.
  • Demonstrated success in assessing, developing, and retaining top talent.
  • Proven ability to drive process improvements, adhere to budgets, and maintain regulatory compliance.
  • Proven ability to lead with the following key competencies: managing change, critical thinking, continuous cost focus, technical expertise, influence, and delivery of sustainable results.
  • Ability to handle conflict and display excellent diplomacy skills in handling situations which can be disruptive to the organization's business development.
  • Must be able to travel 10% of the time and work nights & weekends as needed.
  • Bi-lingual, preferred (English & Portuguese or English & Spanish).
